The estimates of living Holocaust survivors range from 834,000 to 960,000, with between 360,000 and 380,000 in Israel, followed by 184,000–220,000 in the former Soviet Union, 140,000–160,000 in the United States, 80,000–100,000 in Western Europe, 50,000–80,000 in Eastern Europe, and about 20,000 in other countries. The definition of a Holocaust survivor refers to any Jew who lived under the Nazi regime or German occupation, or in a state that collaborated with the Germans or was its ally, and those who fled from any of the above. The category of survivors also includes those who survived the death camps, fought as partisans against the Germans, or were hidden and protected by Gentiles from the Germans.
