Adenauer, Konrad
(1876–1967)
   Adenauer was the burgomaster of Cologne from 1917 to 1945. During his tenure, he was twice imprisoned by Adolf Hitler. As the first chancellor of the German Federal Republic (1949–1963), Adenauer won approval from the Bundestag to make amends for Nazi crimes against the Jews. In September 1951, he addressed the Bundestag and acknowledged the “unspeakable crimes that were perpetrated in the name of the German people that oblige us to make moral and material amends.” In 1952, Adenauer negotiated a reparation agreement with Israel in which Germany made restitution of $845 million to Israel. Subsequently, the West German parliament enacted a law that compensated survivors of the Holocaust for their suffering.
