Large Spaces

Large Spaces
In the fall of 1939, Einsatzkommandos, under orders from the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), accompanied the German army into Poland and carried out executions that were similar to the mass executions subsequently enacted in the Soviet Union. It was in Poland that numerous Schutzstaffel (SS) leaders who were later complicit in the Holocaust learned to think in “large spaces,” a euphemism for mass murder. In violating civilized norms of behavior, according to historian Michael Wildt, the mass murder in Poland marked “the actual founding act of the Reich Security Main Office.”
