Yad Vashem

Yad Vashem
The Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority, Israel’s national institution of Holocaust commemoration, is located in Jerusalem. Yad Vashem was established by an act of the Knesset (parliament) on 18 May 1953. Yad Vashem was inspired by a verse in Isaiah that reads: “Ever unto them will I give within my house and within my walls a monument and a memorial . . . I will give them an everlasting memorial, which will never be cut off.” The museum is the center for Holocaust archives and since 1957 has published Yad Vashem Studies, an annual in Hebrew and English that devotes each issue to the most recent research in Holocaust studies. Yad Vashem also includes a Garden of Remembrance that honors over 13,660 Righteous Gentiles who aided Jews during the Holocaust. For the past several decades, Yad Vashem has also become a major shrine where more than a million people come each year to honor the memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis. A visit to Yad Vashem has also become part of the itinerary for official guests of the State of Israel.
