Wiesel, Elie
(1928– )
   Born in Sighet, Transylvania, Wiesel is a survivor of the Holocaust who, through his novels and personal memoir, Night (1969), dedicated his life to keeping alive the memory of the Shoah. His outspoken condemnation of genocide has earned him unqualified prominence as a person of great moral stature. It was his worldwide prestige that earned him an audience when, on the occasion of his award of the Congressional Medal from President Ronald Reagan in 1985, he chastised the president for his visit to the cemetery in Bitburg, Germany, where 47 members of the WaffenSchutzstaffel (SS) were buried. In 1986, Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel has also played a major role in the planning of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, for which he served as chairman between 1980 and 1986. A professor of humanities at Boston University, Wiesel, through his lectures and writings, has kept the memory of the Holocaust in the forefront of the American conscience.
