“The Thirteenth”
   In the Warsaw ghetto, the Germans organized Jews from the criminal element for the purpose of informing and performing duties that the regular Jewish police refused to participate in. The largest of these groups was located in Warsaw under the name of the Control Office to Combat Black Marketing and Profiteering in the Jewish Residential District. Warsaw’s Jews referred to the Gestapo-directed group as “the Thirteenth,” because its headquarters was located at 13 Leszno Street. “The Thirteenth” served primarily as an intelligence agency for the Gestapo, and consisted of about 300 uniformed Jewish police. Similar groups existed in the Lodz, Kovno, and Lublin ghettos.
