Operation Zeppelin
   Following the German army’s defeat near Moscow, the Nazi high command realized that the war would take longer than anticipated. Seeking to foster unrest in the Soviet Union, the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) at the end of 1941 and the beginning of 1942 deployed behind Soviet lines members of Russian national minorities, supporters of Czarist Russia, and even communist anti-Stalinist groups, for the purpose of gaining intelligence, engaging in sabotage, and using brigades to implement revolt against the Stalinist regime. The Zeppelin units were ordered to fight against both Bolshevism and the Jews. Many of those in the Zeppelin units were recruited from among prisoners of war in concentration camps, using the criteria that the agents selected for the operation were both anticommunist and anti-Semitic, rather than being chosen for their racial purity.
