Jew House

Jew House
Although ghettos were not set up for Jews inside Germany during the course of the Third Reich, between 1940 and 1942 Jews were evicted from their homes and moved into “Jew houses,” where they were forced to live under increasingly overcrowded conditions. Based on a Nazi law promulgated in April 1939, landlords were allowed to evict Jewish tenants if alternative accommodations were available. Increasingly, municipalities began to concentrate the Jewish populations in unused barracks and similar types of buildings. In Mungersdorf, near Cologne, for example, 2,000 Jews were put into a dilapidated fort, 20 to a room. Some 38 such “residence camps” were created after the outbreak of the war.
