GESTAPO

GESTAPO
(Geheime Staatspolizei)
The Gestapo evolved from the Prussian police section known as the Sicherheitspolizei (SIPO) or “security police.” When Heinrich Himmler placed all of the police forces in Germany under his jurisdiction in 1933–1934, he also became the head of the Gestapo. Under Himmler, with Reinhard Heydrich as his chief administrator, the Gestapo was transformed into a police agency that became synonymous with terror. The Gestapo was responsible for identifying and arresting enemies of the state and placing them in “protective custody,” which generally led to imprisonment or incarceration in a concentration camp. In its mission to protect the state from its enemies, the Gestapo was exempt from any control by constituted legal authorities, and consequently used whatever means it deemed necessary to extract information, including torture.
