Desk Murderer

Desk Murderer
The term “desk murderer” originated with Hannah Arendt who, in her articles for the New Yorker magazine on the Adolf Eichmann trial in Jerusalem in 1961 referred to him as this type of perpetrator of the Holocaust. The organizers of the Holocaust, such as Heinrich Himmler, Reinhard Heydrich, and Adolf Eichmann, gave the orders, negotiated with industry to supply the carbon monoxide and Zyklon B poison gasses that were used in the gas chambers, and yet they personally killed no one. According to Arendt, they were the paradigmatic “desk murderers,” what she labeled as embodying the “banality of evil.”
