Condolence Letter

Condolence Letter
(Trostbrief)
The secretive nature of the Nazi Euthanasia Program required that the relatives of the murdered patients be informed that their loved ones had died of natural causes. This took the form of a condolence letter that was sent by the staff of the killing center to the relatives of the deceased. The reality was that most of the patients were gassed upon arrival. Using subterfuge, the administration of the euthanasia center would backdate letters that indicated the patient had arrived safely and was in good care. About 10 days after the patient’s death, the staff mailed the socalled condolence letter, which informed the relative that the patient had died unexpectedly of complications.
